A Tribute to the Lovely Malina
(QA Gadiel X QA Mystic Magic)
QA Malina was truly beloved. Of all of the foals that Quintessential Arabians has produced, Malina was the sweetest and most kind of them all. There was simply something unexplainably beautiful in her eyes, a tranquility and peace there that radiated and wrapped around all that met her. I know you may think you know what I am talking about, and we have had many special foals with a beautiful expression in their eyes, but Malina's grace transcended beyond that into something very rare and truly difficult to explain! Two days before she was so tragically lost to us, Malina got a small puncture wound on one of her knees. At only two months of age, she quietly accepted the cleaning and wrapping of her leg by Ashleigh and I...standing more quietly than many an adult horse. She seemed to understand that our aim was to help her, and put her nose on the top of my head while I worked. But her small wound was not to be healed, nor was it to be the end of our beautiful Malina. She was found in the evening, at midnight, when I went outside and heard the electric fence snapping and went to go check. She was trapped under a gate, having been unable to get out from underneathe it....and the beautiful light in her eyes was already gone. Unfortunately our Malina had quite a habit of laying next to fences, which is probably how she got her small puncture wound. Despite the fact that we have no climb fencing all over the place that would have been fine to lay near or against, this time she chose to lay at the gate. It broke my heart to find her there that way. Only a few hours before, she was eating hay happily with her mother. I will never be able to explain how horrifying and terrible was my feeling at not being able to help her; at not having been there. QA Malina was an absolutely stunning Polish/Russian cross. Her sire Gadiel is a beautiful stallion with extreme quality, disposition, size, charisma and conformation. He is a perfect representative of his sire *Ganges and grandsire Monogramm, not only in genotype but in his ability as a sire thus far. From Gadiel Malina received his trademark look of gorgeous tippy ears, a long elastic neck with upright set coming out of a fantastic shoulder, and long, correct hip with powerful hindquarter. Malina was a very tall and strong mare with fantastic strength and movement. QA Gadiel is pictured above. His show record includes being the 2008 Region 8 Champion Sporthorse Stallion In-Hand, Top 5 Region 8 Stallion (open), and is a champion halter horse. QA Malina's dam QA Mystic Magic is a classic example of the Nariadni mares of old. A Straight Russian beauty, she is from the highly successful cross of the legendary Russian sires Muscat and Nariadni. Mystic Magic possesses a gorgeous dishy head with the famous gigantic soft "Nariadni eyes", a wonderfully smooth body, fancy movement...and an incredibly sweet disposition. (In fact, when we asked Mystic Magic to take on an orphan colt, Eksodus, she accepted him within five minutes...but then, we hadn't figured on Malina! She told us that absolutely no way was she going to share her mother when it came to nursing!) Mystic Magic's TR Narcotic is a 15'2" hand US National Top Ten Western Pleasure horse, Class A champion and
Regional winner and is by Nariadni out of Garketa, who was by National Champion Park horse Mag out of the noted broodmare Parketa. Mystic Magic is out of the beautiful mare Muscats Mystique, by Triple Crown Winner Muscat (pictured, right)and out of the gorgeous bay mare Sentana who was imported from Belgium and was a lovely mare with gorgeous movement. Sentana was by Numizmat (pictured, left), 15'3" hand Belgian National champion stallion, out of the Tamerlan daughter Serisa.
There were no "holes" anywhere in Malina's pedigree, and it was excellence in every way. Bred for athleticism and beauty combined, she was all that we had dreamed of...and more. I miss her every day. One of my strongest memories of Malina is how she would put her chin on the stall gate, with those tippy ears pricked and those gigantic eyes calling me over, and nicker at me when I would call her name a certain way. She loved to talk to me, and would come to the pasture gate when the children would call her name...even when her mother wouldn't. She was an incredibly strong and athletic filly...and huge! I will never forget how gentle and quiet she was when we were wrapping her leg...she could have given us quite a "tussle", but she didn't...she just quietly accepted our minstrations. I had hoped to show her alongside her wonderful sire at the sporthorse Nationals, and imagined her bringing home a National championship one day...she was that wonderful. And as I used to call her every day to hear her melodic whinny..."Malina, Malina...lovely Malina...goodbye!"
